"All of my paintings have been created in my Northamptonshire studio in oils on a rigid support. A grisaille underpainting was painted first in a traditional style before colour was added.
The magic of the Goonies still captivates me, thirty years after I saw it for the first time - seven kids pitting their wits against a long dead pirate king! This painting aims to capture some of that magic, is filled with references to the classic movie and packed with "rich stuff". Now I'm older I find myself wondering if the ice cream and the marbles aren't the real treasure... who am I kidding?
I recreated the "Copperbones" using images from a 1980s fanzine. The key was sculpted carefully, trying to capture every detail from the original. Finally I took a mould and cast the key in resin.
For One-eyed Willy I bought a medical model skull through ebay then set about making it accurate. I drilled out teeth before applying paint and making an eye patch.
The Swensens tub was recreated with a little assistance from Swensens themselves while the lamp and candle stick are genuine vintage items. Many of the coins are castings I made, although I have to admit some of the fillers are actually chocolate!"
